On the Pulse is a collaborative multimedia initiative between Chrysalis Academy and YearBeyond aimed at providing a platform for young people and communities to share their stories, insights, hopes and dreams through various media channels. The project utilizes podcasting, videography, photography, and writing to empower youth in expressing their unique perspectives, fostering personal growth, and creating connections within their communities.

Videography

Our videography arm serves as a dynamic platform, providing a visual canvas for the creative expression of young individuals. Through the lens of our cameras, we empower youth to articulate their emotions, share their experiences, and showcase their unique perspectives to the world.

Through curated workshops, immersive masterclasses, and hands-on training sessions, we are committed to not only honing the technical skills of our participants but also nurturing their storytelling abilities.

Writing

We believe in the power of words, recognising that the pen is mightier than the sword. Through our writing pillar, we provide a platform for in-depth exploration of thoughts and emotions, empowering youth to articulate their ideas coherently and confidently.

Our writing work promotes literacy, nurtures critical thinking, and cultivates storytelling abilities, fostering a community of young writers who are not only skilled at expressing themselves but also capable of inspiring change through their words.

Photography

Through our photography arm, we empower young individuals by equipping them with the technical proficiencies of photography and cultivating a deep appreciation for intricacies of life, encouraging wonder and curiosity.

With each click of the shutter, we ignite a passion for exploration and self-expression, encouraging our participants to see the world through a different lens. By immersing themselves in the art of photography, young people also sharpen their perception of the world around them.

Publications

This anthology is a brave and beautiful offering from the young voices of the Western Cape. In these pages, they speak truths that are too often silenced. These truths are about identity, trauma, hope, home, loss, love, and survival. The arts take from real life and give back to it in many generous ways. This anthology is one of them.

Not all work is paid work. Not all work is seen or acknowledged and yet its effects are felt everywhere. In this anthology young people explore the emotional, mental, physical and communal work with which they are engaged.
