Public Speaking Workshop: Finding your voice is one thing. Learning how to use it is another.
On 10 and 11 October 2026, participants from YearBeyond and Chrysalis came together for a two-day public speaking workshop hosted by On The Pulse. The workshop created a space for young people to explore their communication styles, build confidence and discover how they can use their voices to engage, inspire and influence others.
Through practical exercises and guided activities, participants explored voice projection, body language, stage presence and authentic storytelling. These skills are essential not only for public speaking, but also for expressing ideas clearly, connecting with different audiences and communicating with purpose.
More than just speaking
Public speaking is about more than standing in front of a crowd. It requires an understanding of how we communicate, how we present ourselves and how we connect with the people listening.
For Unathi Zimema from YearBeyond, the workshop highlighted the potential she has to become the public speaker she aspires to be. She recognised that developing this skill takes practice and experience, and that each opportunity to speak is a chance to grow in confidence.
Desmond Sauls from Chrysalis reflected on the importance of voice projection and body language, recognising how a speaker's delivery can influence the way an audience receives a message.
For Kayde Willemse, the workshop highlighted the power of communication to develop young minds, inspire others and contribute to safer communities.
Each reflection offered a different perspective on the value of finding your voice, but they shared a common thread: communication is a skill that can be developed and used to make a difference.
Creating space for young voices
At YearBeyond and Chrysalis, creating opportunities for young people to learn, grow and discover their potential is an important part of their development. Initiatives such as this workshop give participants the opportunity to explore their strengths, learn from one another and develop skills they can carry into their personal and professional lives.
Through On The Pulse, young people are encouraged to recognise the value of their own stories and ideas. By learning how to communicate with authenticity and purpose, they can become more confident in sharing their experiences, expressing their views and contributing to conversations that matter.
Whether they are supporting learners, serving their communities or inspiring their peers, young people who communicate with confidence are better equipped to build connections, share knowledge and contribute to positive change.
The power of a voice
The public speaking workshop was a reminder that every young person has a story worth telling and ideas worth sharing. Developing the confidence to communicate those ideas takes time, practice and opportunities to step outside familiar spaces.
By investing in these skills, YearBeyond, Chrysalis and On The Pulse are helping young people strengthen their voices and recognise the impact they can have on the people and communities around them.
Finding your voice is the beginning. Learning to use it with confidence, authenticity and purpose is how you make an impact.
